Golden Channel Breathing Technique

Lie on your back with your legs and feet resting on a Yoga ball or rest your legs on the seat of a chair. This exercise may also be done sitting in a chair.

Close your eyes and observe your breath. As you inhale, visualize your breath expanding down your spine. Hold your breath in for a moment and concentrate on your coccyx. Exhale slowly and concentrate on your breath as it rises back up through each vertebra of your spine. Rest here for three deep breaths.

On the next inhalation, imagine a channel of golden light descending through each vertebra of your spine. Hold your breath in for a moment and concentrate on the base of your spine. Exhaling, visualize your breath rising back up through each vertebra. Continue to concentrate on your breath as it expands up and down the golden channel of your spine. With each exhalation, let your breath become slower and more subtle. Experience that, as your breath becomes more subtle, your body feels lighter.

Continue to enjoy this subtle and energizing breath for as long as you like, then rest here a few moments with your eyes closed to enjoy the soothing effect of this pose.

This restorative inverted pose gives a rest to the legs, increases circulation in the upper body, and refreshes both body and mind. The reversed blood flow gives a rest to the heart and soothes the nervous system. This is an effective exercise for teaching students one pointed focus and enhancing their ability to concentrate for longer periods. Practicing this pose with a partner creates a feeling of harmony and union.
